Dear Today’s Bride…

Dear Today’s Bride: Since I’ve been old enough to understand the concept of a bridal shower, I’ve always known that I have no interest in having one.

I understand that the original bridal showers had a purpose: Brides moved from their parents’ house to their husband’s house without so much as a spatula.

But these days, most men and women live in apartments and often own their houses before they get married, and have supplied themselves with necessary kitchen utensils and linens.

I am one of those people, and I’m also lucky enough to be marrying a man who owns a home that is well stocked with anything one might need to cook a meal or make a bed.

Not surprisingly, aunts on both sides are planning on throwing us a bridal shower, and our friends are insisting that we have one because “it’s what you do.”

Neither of us finds a shower necessary, though we are touched that our extended family wants to honor us in this way.

How do we say no to such a gracious gift?   — Future Bride

Dear Bride: You could deflect this very nice offer by giving these generous aunties a different opportunity to be helpful to you and your future husband.

Thank them for the shower offer, but tell them honestly that you just don’t want one.

Ask them if they’d like to get together to host an informal after-wedding brunch for tired family members and out-of-town guests the day after your wedding.

You and your new husband can pop in to this event together and enjoy a plate of eggs, a bagel and a cup of coffee with your new family as a newly married couple.  –borrowed from the Chicago Tribune
