Planning the Rehearsal Dinner

Thanks to GroomGroove.com for this information.  Grooms, check out their site for more Groom and Best man Info.

Whether you’re having a formal wedding or one in your backyard wedding, the wedding rehearsal dinner is an opportunity to relax with friends and family before the demands of wedding day kick in. It’s typically one of the groom’s duties to plan a rehearsal dinner. The guys at GroomGroove.com vote in favor of taking it easy, and for grooms to volunteer to plan it.

Fun New Traditions – Groom’s Cake

By: John Newcomb

What were they thinking?

Reeves Cake Shop

That’s probably your first thought when you heard of a wedding with a groom’s cake. “A groom’s cake? Really?”

You can’t really be blamed, though. Most of us have grown up with the idea that a wedding is the bride’s day – a day when the groom just has to show up, stand in the background with his buddies, and let the bride be the center of attention.

All that is changing these days, however. The modern groom cares as much about the wedding as the bride, and wouldn’t want to be less involved in it than her. The idea of the groom’s cake, thus, doesn’t seem that alien after all.

What’s interesting is that the groom’s cake is actually a centuries old tradition. Down south, the groom’s cake was a regular part of wedding ceremonies – a tradition that lasted well until the 1950s, after which it slowly went out of fashion.

But like everything retro, it too is making a comeback (and thankfully so!). A groom’s cake can be a nice, unique touch to your wedding. It can make the ceremony, shall we say, a little bit more unique.

Rather than doing what everyone else does (boring white wedding, the same old cake, the same flowers, etc.), why not spice it up a bit with a large wedding cake (as per the bride’s directions), and a smaller, more “fun” groom’s cake. Usually, the groom’s cake is built around the groom (duh!), and reflects his interests or hobbies. If the groom is big on football, a cake shaped like a football helmet would be wonderful. If he’s into music, why not get a cake shaped like an electric guitar?

Little touches like these can really add tons of color to your wedding and make it all the more memorable. Besides, who wouldn’t want to eat a gigantic electric guitar shaped groom’s cake?
