Edible flowers can take the cake

Who knew that violas — bigger than a violet, smaller than a pansy — had such a heady fragrance? Yet when Mark Toocheck lifts the plastic tarp from a raised bed of the perky-faced flowers, the lilac-like scent of a flower garden whooshes out.

The taste comes later.

Yes, taste. These yellow and purple flowers are edible, something we might not think about until we learn that Mark’s wife, Karen, washes and sugarcoats them for as much as a year of extended life. Most will end up on cakes or cupcakes at special occasions across the country, delivering the surprise factor that Karen loves.

“Everybody says, ‘I didn’t know you could eat these,'” she said.

You can eat some flower species, but not all of them, a difference that can get tricky. Karen uses day lilies, which are edible, but not Asiatic lilies, which are poisonous. Click here for a long list of edible flowers and herbs.

Every flower Karen makes in her home business, Crystallized Flower Co. in Willoughby, has a delicate snap and a little different flavor, some harder to detect than others.

“The day lilies are a little sweet and sour,” she said. “The violas are a little like parsley, and the borage like cucumber.”

Something Borrowed Something Blue

Ever wonder where all those wedding traditions come from? Depending on where you live, weddings you attend will all have different types of things going on. Some will be in churches, some at the beach; some will even play The Chicken Dance at the reception.

Typical weddings in the United States are loosely based on the Italian’s structure. If the couple and couple’s families are religious, they start out their ceremony in a church or somewhere where a priest or pastor can unite them and a usual mass is performed. If it is the bride’s first marriage, she must wear white. This is usually called a white wedding, and originated from Victorian England, and symbolized purity. In Italy, wedding invitations are to this day still engraved and addressed by hand to show the importance of the occasion.

One interesting tradition that many brides must wear is “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a lucky sixpence in her shoe” symbolizing the unity of both families, fidelity, virginity, and financial security. This is also a Victorian-era tradition, but is now a part of many weddings celebrated in many countries.

Christians believe that marriage is one of the Seven Sacraments and it is encouraged for couples to get married, that is why is it sometimes referred to as “Holy Matrimony”. And as far as Christian weddings go, Catholics believe it is morally wrong to divorce and if done, neither of the couple may remarry in the church.

The term “cocktail hour” comes from Italian tradition. At the start of a reception, the bridal party and all the guests are separated for an hour and served cocktails. Nowadays, this hour is typically used for taking pictures and getting things ready. As soon as the hour is over, the bride and groom and rest of the bridal party enter and perform their first dance. At one point, no gifts were given. Instead, everyone brought the newlyweds an envelope of money and received a wedding favor in return.

In ancient Celtic times, the bride and groom to be married would tie their hands together (called “Handfasting“). This is where the phrase “typing the knot” came from. It’s rarely still used today, mainly in families that celebrate a pagan lifestyle.

And then there are the popular traditions such as rice. Rice is thrown to wish the newlyweds prosperity in their pantry.   This tradition has opened the door for many “green” alternatives such as, bird seed, bubbles,  & flower petals.  Then there’s the cake cutting ceremony where the bride and groom often smear cake on each other’s faces. And then there’s the part where the bride tosses her bouquet and the groom tosses his bride’s garter. Whoever catches the bouquet and garter is said to be the next in line to be married.

Pull Off the Perfect Outdoor Spring Wedding

It’s spring … the tulips are blooming, the temperatures are rising — what a perfect time for a wedding!

For most of us, spring means the start of new life. Flowers bloom, and the earth wakes up from a long hibernation. If you live in a warmish climate, the perfect place for your spring wedding might be outdoors in a garden that’s bursting with fresh flowers.

As the weather begins to heat up and gardens start to bloom, many brides find the perfect setting for their special day among the greenery and budding flowers. There are so many ways to set off an outdoor wedding in springtime! Here are a few, with an eye towards elegance:

Props
Make use of formal props such as candelabras and urns, and drape containers and tables with vintage linens and lace. Arbors look their best when decorated with simpler, unfussy garden materials — as opposed to over-the-top heaps of greens and garlands, a heavy look that’s less popular now.

Centerpieces
Try clean-looking centerpieces with one consistent bloom. For example, pots filled with tulips or urns holding only anemones are really making the scene for spring. Color
Vibrant color is hot! Try cool greens mixed with eye-popping hues like coral or hot pink. Garden herbs also look (and smell) wonderful for weddings in spring. Try potting combinations of rosemary, thyme, and other herbs for green centerpieces that also make great take-home gifts.

Bouquets
Many spring brides are choosing bouquets filled with color – structurally simple, but daring! Brides are calling for stunning bouquet made up of tulips, or anemones: a Dutch flower with dark black centers, and vibrant petals of red, purple, or fuchsia. Lilacs or nosegays filled with sweet peas, miniature grape hyacinths, and ranunculus are popular, too.

Shabby Chic
A big trend right now is to mix and match contemporary with vintage – in other words, pure Shabby Chic. Dried lavender bound with dried grasses and tied to the pews lends a uniquely pleasing Shabby Chic feel. Dress windowsills with wreaths and candles in colored mason jars. Later on, reuse these same decorations to brighten up the reception tables.

Spring Wedding Gowns
Wedding gowns with a touch of color are in! Try a dress with sophisticated tan, beige or pink overtones — champagne tones are especially popular.
Nostalgia rears its head here as well — many brides are choosing gowns reminiscent of the 40s, 50s or 60s, while others are opting to wear the gown their mother or grandmother wore (either literally the same — or a loving copy).

Outdoor Candles
Candles lend a soft and romantic aura to any event. But to make the most of them, marry a bit later in the day, or have the reception run into the evening and light your candles then. To add a touch of spring to your candles, wrap bright satin ribbons around clear votive cups. (Multiple layers and colors lend an especially contemporary look.) These can double as guest wedding favors.

Don’t Forget the Backup Plan
Spring weather can be unpredictable. Have your Plan B worked out in case of rain, fog or strong winds. Look for a nearby elegant indoor hall nearby to serve as a backup. Alternatively, line up an event tent for the morning of the wedding, just in case (guests enjoy tents even in perfect weather, too — they help soften the sun’s strong rays). Having a backup plan for any outdoor wedding, anytime of the year, is a wise move.

A wedding in spring can be romantic, elegant, and fun! Knowing what you want — and lining up great planning and event staff — are the keys to a successful spring wedding.

We have all seen those crystal-clear, intricately carved ice statues at weddings and corporate events. Although they might shout “rich and famous,” they are a good deal more affordable than you might expect. For your next event, select an ice sculpting company that can translate your ideas into frozen works of art.

Step 1

Decide when you need the ice sculpture. Whether a company can make your ice sculpture depends on the day and time that you need it. Some companies will take next-day orders while others will require you to order up to a month in advance.

Step 2

Find out whether your banquet facility has a preferred vendor before you start your search. The venue might require that you hire its preferred ice carver instead of finding one on your own.

Step 3
